Tanks and Tankers from Our Machines: The SBFM Line for Building Storage Tanks, Tankers and Pressure Vessels

Every storage tank and tanker is built from the same few parts: a rolled shell, two formed heads and carefully welded seams. SBFM Machinery builds the sheet bending and flanging machines that shape those parts. The product photo, headed Tanks and Tankers from Our Machines, shows a large tank produced with SBFM equipment, with the SBFM logo on the image and a small group of people standing in front of the tank.

How Tanks and Tankers Are Built

Industry sources describe a simple sequence. Steel plate is cut to size, the edges of the plate are prepared and the plate is rolled into a cylinder. The seam is welded to form the shell, the end caps or heads are formed and welded on, and fittings such as nozzles and manholes are added. The finished tank is then tested, often with a hydrostatic test using water to check for leaks and confirm that it can withstand its design pressure.

Heads can be flat, dished or hemispherical depending on the design. For heads, sources describe a two-stage process: first the spherical dish is pressed (dishing), then the knuckle and straight flange are formed (flanging). Common shapes include the torispherical heads defined in standards such as DIN 28011 and DIN 28013.

Which SBFM Machines Do What?

The hydraulic dishing press with manipulator forms the crown of the head from a flat round blank. The flanging machine then forms the knuckle radius and straight flange so the head fits the shell and welds cleanly. For stainless, food and pharmaceutical tanks, the dished head polishing machine grinds and polishes the inner and outer surface, which is easier to clean and looks professional.

The shell itself is made by roll bending. Rolled plates, rings and stiffening sections come from roll bending machines, and the profile and pipe bending machine reforms pipes and sections for supports, frames and piping. Together, these machines cover the main forming steps of a tank workshop.

Key Features and Benefits

  • Complete forming line; dishing, flanging, polishing and rolling from one manufacturer
  • Suitable for many tank types; storage tanks, tankers, boilers and pressure vessels
  • Thin and thick walled work; for pressurised and non-pressurised containers
  • Consistent heads; dished and flanged to match the shell
  • Clean surface finish; polishing for hygienic and decorative tanks
  • Single partner; simpler planning, spare parts and service
  • Machines built in Konya; designed, assembled and tested in our own facilities

Applications

  • Fuel, water and chemical tankers
  • Storage tanks, silos and LPG tanks
  • Pressure vessels and air receivers
  • Boilers, heat exchangers and hot water tanks
  • Food, dairy and brewery tanks
  • Agricultural, irrigation and greenhouse water tanks

Tips for Building Better Tanks

Match the shell and the heads: choose head diameter, thickness and profile together with the shell design. Preparing the plate edges before rolling helps produce a true cylinder and a clean weld. Plan for thinning when forming heads, as practitioners often quote roughly ten to fifteen percent at the thinnest point, and check the finished weld seams with proper testing before the tank leaves the workshop.

Part of a Complete Sheet Metal Forming Range

SBFM Machinery has built sheet metal forming machines in Konya since 1998. For tank and tanker production our range includes hydraulic dishing presses with manipulators, flanging machines, polishing machines for dished heads, hydraulic roll bending machines, profile and pipe bending machines and special corrugated and grooved rolls. That means a single partner can equip your workshop from tank heads to shells, rings and pipes.

Why Choose SBFM Machinery?

Machines are designed, cut, welded, machined, assembled and tested in our own facilities, and our quality policy rests on customer satisfaction. We believe we grow together with our customers, so we listen first and recommend the model that fits your work, not simply the largest one. Technical guidance and spare parts help keep your machine productive for years.

How to Choose the Right Machine

  • Types of tanks you build and their sizes
  • Plate thickness and materials, such as carbon or stainless steel
  • Largest head diameter and shell diameter
  • Daily or weekly output
  • Which stages you want in-house: dishing, flanging, polishing, rolling
  • Floor space, crane capacity and power supply

Maintenance for Long Service Life

Keep hydraulic oil clean, inspect seals, hoses and rolls, lubricate moving parts and clean the machines after each shift. A simple routine keeps every stage of the line accurate and the whole tank workshop productive.
